The Musical of Hamilton is the true story of Alexander Hamilton, one of the American Founding Fathers, from his early days as a young broke immigrant to one of the most critical figures in the American Revolution and as the nation’s first Secretary of Treasury. It explores a story of romance and loss, both in and outside politics, performed by a critically acclaimed cast and crew. Rounded out by contemporary music genres of hip-hop, jazz, and R&B, it is a fast-paced production that has been received with enthusiasm by audiences both in the U.S.A. and abroad.

Making its start off Broadway in 2015, Hamilton was not the instant Broadway hit that you will see now. Lin-Manuel Miranda has talked honestly about its inspiration, starting as a concept album in 2009, with Miranda saying that he was “thrilled that the White House called me tonight, because I’m actually working on a hip-hop album. It's a concept album about the life of someone I think embodies hip-hop: treasury secretary Alexander Hamilton.” That one single performance earned praise and a well-earned standing ovation from the audience at the time, including former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, and directly led to Miranda’s completion of the Hamilton musical we see now.
With his background in musical theater, Lin-Manuel Miranda has also taken inspiration from other great theater pieces such as Les Misérables, which holds to a common theme that tells the story of a struggle, and succeeding from that struggle, instead of the typical musical theatre biases that follow the trend of being very positive and happy. Hamilton is no different, being about the difficulties arising as an orphaned immigrant from the Caribbean who climbed the ladder and became the first American Treasury Secretary. With the greatest respect to its source material, the production shows us both the good and bad in Alexander Hamilton’s rise to power, by not only showing us a glimpse into his character and struggle, but also his influence and lasting legacy in being able to powerfully shape North America during its time period.
By telling this story, Hamilton continues to present its relevance in popular culture and even international public discourse, confronting themes and issues that are deeply relevant not only to North America, but also around the world. Even the use of musical genres like hip hop, jazz, and R&B as the productions score has cemented its place in pop culture, making it one of the most exciting hit Greensboro musicals today.
