The classical tale of your favorite big green meanie is BACK for its 25th anniversary on stage! From November 21 to 26, you and your family can experience How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical LIVE at the Steven Tanger Center in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Narrated by Max, faithful canine companion, the story begins during the festive holiday seasons. Christmas is a comin’! And we all know what that means… Bells and mistletoes! Milk and cookies! Tree toppers and stockings and PRESENTS! How completely and utterly detestable! Or at least that’s what our grumpy green-haired star would snarl.
Introducing mean old Mr. Grinch! For decades, the ill-tempered recluse gazed in contempt as the happy Whos sang and celebrated. Well, NO MORE, he says! With the help of his dog Max (also our narrator), he schemes to steal their beloved Christmas from right under their stubby noses. However, every good story needs a villain (or a hero, in this case). Stepping up to the fuzzy-fingered naughtiness is the boisterous Cindy Lou Who! Barely taller than a stepstool, how would this tiny little thing thwart such dastardly plans?
In just under ninety minutes, the merry musical will set you off on a rollicking quest to figure out the true meaning of the holiday spirit. Beyond all the gifts and jingles, what’s so special about Christmas that it can just waltz into a heart that’s supposedly a few sizes too small?
There’s an ongoing open call audition for the tour’s West and East Coast legs, so casting details are still under wraps. Check back with us soon for the latest reveals!
Dr. Seuss’ cherished yuletide tale comes to life again in this 2023 production featuring the iconic book and lyrics by Timothy Mason and music by Mel Marvin! Based on three-time Tony Award winner Jack O’Brien’s creation, director Matt August returns at the helm, with choreographer Bob Richard picking up the reins of his former partner John DeLuca. The musical will also paint the wonderful world of Whoville in vibrant color with Robert Morgan’s stunning costumes and John Lee Beatty’s breathtaking sets.
But wait, there’s more! For all you fans of the original 1966 animated series, How The Grinch Stole Christmas will showcase nostalgic hits written by Albert Hague and Dr. Seuss himself, such as “You’re A Mean One Mr. Grinch” and “Welcome Christmas.”
In addition, the show assigns Peter Leigh-Nilsen on Musical Supervision, with Crossroads Live North America on General Management and Murnane Casting on Casting duties.
“We wanted the Seuss to shine through. It’s one of the great joys of our lives to know that children who saw the Grinch all those years ago are now bringing their own kids to see this show and that for them and many others, his spirit does indeed live on right here on this stage,” shared writer-lyricist Timothy Mason.
Despite its reputation as a decades-old classic, the Grinch’s story was only recently adapted to the stage in 1994. Based on the 1957 children’s book of the same name, How The Grinch Stole Christmas was first commissioned by the Children’s Theatre Company in Minneapolis.
The show premiered in 1998 at San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre, featuring future High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens as Cindy Lou Who. A spectacular success, it would later become the theatrical company’s unbroken annual holiday tradition.
In 2006, the production made its Broadway debut at the Hilton Theatre (now Foxwoods), making history as the first-ever musical to offer a dozen presentations per week. It smashed box-office records during its first round in December, ending Wicked’s hundred-week top-grossing streak.
